Preparation for Surgery
Transportation
You can not drive yourself home after surgery. Anesthesia often has lingering effects on the body, therefore please arrange for an adult family member or friend to drive you home after your procedure. For your safety, we will not permit you to leave alone. Please note that your surgery will be cancelled if appropriate transportation arrangements have not been made.
The night before surgery
Do not eat anything after 10 p.m. the night before your surgery. Do not drink anything after midnight (including water) the night before your surgery unless you are directed to do so by your doctor. This includes hard candy, gum, or prescription medications (unless ordered by your doctor). You may, however, brush your teeth and rinse out your mouth with water.

If your insurance provider requires a co-payment or deductible, you will be required to pay it at this time.

Many surgeries require IVs and monitoring leads. For adults, we usually attach these in Pre-Op, but if the patient is very young, we may wait to attach these in the operating room.

Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian (proof may be required).
Anesthesia

Be sure to tell your anesthesiologist about any medications you are currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbs. You will not be allowed to drive and/or make legal decisions within 24 hours after receiving IV sedation or general anesthesia.

Medications and surgery
Let your doctor know about any medications you are taking before surgery including herbal preparations and dietary supplements.
-
Definitely DO take your heart and blood pressure medicines as usual.
-
You need not take vitamins or similar medications unless specifically instructed.
-
If you are diabetic, the pre-op nurse or your doctor will instruct you about these medications.
-
If you use inhalers for asthma or emphysema, you should continue them as normal and bring them with you on the day of surgery.
-
If you are on 'blood thinning' medication, like aspirin, motrin, coumadin, or plavix, these must be stopped several days before surgery.
-
Feel free to contact us with any questions.
Herbal medications may have harmful effects on the surgery. Many of these remedies may effect your clotting mechanism and interfere with the anesthetic agents. (The list of drugs and their side effects are too great for this site.) We generally request that you stop these medications two weeks before surgery. Please remember to mention these remedies when being asked about medication.
